Event Series Event Series: Trail Blazers Task Force Meeting

The Wellness Coalition Trailblazers Task Force committee is a part of Champions for Change, and seeks to assess and address community design to provide more opportunities for safe physical activity for residents. The committee will work to educate, promote, improve, and make available safe and accessible streets, bicycle lanes, sidewalks, transportation, parks, and trails, land, and schools for families and individuals to be physically active. This will be accomplished by:

  • Using the CDC Active Community Tool to assess community plans, policies, and resources for improving built environments for physical activity
  • Promoting the benefits of being more physically active throughout everyday activities
  • Educating and informing others about the importance of having equitable access to safe and accessible infrastructure
  • Identifying opportunities to improve infrastructure in rural areas
  • Partnering with organizations that can partner with the committee to enhance community design at specific locations

Trailblazers Task Force Committee members will:

  • Serve as a public forum for discussion on issues on activity friendly routes and everyday destinations
  • Help asses the needs of community infrastructure for safe, clean, and accessible routes and destinations
  • Identify and address concerns and issues on infrastructure and how they affect the community and stakeholders
  • Act as liaison between public and private sectors
  • Build relationships with organizations and stakeholders that manage and are responsible for infrastructure
  • Promote and provide ideas to increase education and knowledge on the importance of not only being physically active but also caring for the infrastructure and improvements that are provided
  • Give a voice to often marginalized community members affected by lack of access to activity-friendly routes and everyday destinations
  • Play an active role in educating policymakers and the public on the importance of providing maintenance safety to activity-friendly routes and everyday destinations

Examples of activity friendly routes:

  • Street design
  • Infrastructure to accommodate pedestrians and bicyclists
  • Public transportation

Examples of everyday destinations:

  • Land use planning
  • Parks and recreational facilities
  • Schools
