What is the COVID-19 Omicron variant and am I at risk?
- COVID-19, like most viruses, constantly change and become more diverse.
- The Omicron variant spreads more easily than earlier variants of the virus that cause COVID-19, including the Delta variant.
- The greatest risk of transmission is among unvaccinated people who are much more likely to contract, and therefore transmit the virus.
- Current vaccines protect against severe illness, hospitalizations, and deaths due to infection with the Omicron variant. However, breakthrough infections in people who are vaccinated can occur. People who are up to date with their COVID-19 vaccines and get COVID-19 are less likely to develop serious illness than those who are unvaccinated and get COVID-19.
- The best way to protect yourself against COVID-19, including the Omicron variant, is to get vaccinated. Find a COVID-19 vaccine.
